Winter is the perfect time to follow your own special “call of the wild”. The solitude, peace and beauty of winter in this mountain wilderness fills your senses as you hike or swish silently through the snowfilled forests on snowshoes or by dogsled in search of wildlife. Lean about wildlife behavior, habitat and their amazing adaptability to the often harsh conditions of winter.
As the snow deepens in the high country the animals move to wintering grounds in lower elevations and valley bottoms. Animals you can see in winter include moose, mountain caribou, deer, wolves, lynx, cougar, furbearers such as marten, ermine and perhaps a rare glimpse of a wolverine. Birds abound in this winter wonderland - jays, woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, owls and eagles soar along the rivers and in the forests.
Snowshoeing
Get a taste of the main means of transportation of the early pioneers, furtraders, and miners. Snowshoeing is fun and easy. Enjoy an outdoor adventure on snowshoes – the quiet swish of the snow under your feet as you and your guide observe wildlife in their natural winter habitat.
Dog Sledding
Ride a dog sled pulled by a team of 6-8 trained working dogs with a skilled musher as sled master. Or with a short orientation and instructional session you can guide your own sled and team of dogs. Thrill to the raw power of the specially bred Husky teams as they speed along the trails taking you into the heart of the Cariboo Mountains winter wilderness wonderland. This was another means of winter transport of the early pioneers. A fun way to observe nature in the back country.
Winter hiking
Under the protection of the forest canopy the snow is often not deep making it a perfect place for winter hiking. Dressed warmly with a good pair of winter hikers or snowpack boots it is a wonderful way to spend a day exploring the forest in search of wildlife inhabitants and birds.
